I'm a huge fan of playing [good] music extremely loud. Knowing this, it might surprise you when I admit I rarely listen to music while driving. Rather than singing along with my favorite radio station, I attend "Automobile University" each time I step foot into my vehicle.
As a result, I've learned more things in the past few months than I have the past few years...
Amy Jones, in her book "Twice as Much in Half the Time," states,
“One attends automobile university by listening to education materials while riding in the car. A study at USC has shown that if a person drives at least 12,000 miles per year and uses this method of education, in three years he or she would have the equivalent of two years of college education."
How is this possible?
What exactly is an audiobook?
(Remember those late nights telling stories around the campfire? Yeah, audiobooks are sort of like that.)
If you're like me, you love learning new things: foreign languages, investing, vacation spots, financial planning, business marketing, entrepreneurship...the list goes on. I'm sure most of the folks reading this would agree they don't have "extra" time during the day to simply sit and read. In my particular situation, being enrolled in a doctor of physical therapy program forces me to have to sit and read textbooks enough as it is! This is why listening to an audiobook is so attractive.
Is listening to an audiobook considered "reading?"
I operationally define reading as "understanding the concepts of a story." Therefore, as long as I understand the concepts of the audiobook I'm listening to, I consider it another book that I have read!
Where can I find audiobooks?
Still don't believe audiobooks are your thing?
Attending "Automobile University"
Keep in mind that audiobooks can be listened to in more places than just your vehicle. I have downloaded the Audible app for my iPhone and now sync audiobooks I have purchased online with my mobile device. Doing it this way allows me to listen to my favorite stories or "how-to" books while cleaning, exercising, walking the dog, or doing laundry.
You can no longer use the excuse of not having enough time in the day to sit down and read. Download an audiobook and enroll in Automobile University today!
